Why This Star Wars Fan Won’t See Episode 1 In 3D

Vader might be all excited about 3D, but I'm still waiting for the OT Theatrical Release on blu-ray

I’ve been a Star Wars fan since 1977.  I love the original trilogy, and the prequels were pretty good because they told us all the back story that the original trilogy only hinted at, (and that Obi-Wan/Anakin battle in part three was awesome) but what die-hard fans like me realize is that Lucas is simply milking that cash cow for all it’s worth.  His effort to sucker me in to see a lackluster movie in 3D just because it is jumping off the screen at me is not enough to get me to throw down the $15 to jump on the bandwagon.

The point is, Episodes 1 and 2 received horrible reviews when they first hit screens, basically saying that the story was lackluster, the acting was stodgy and even though the special effects were far ahead of their time, people need more than that to make a great film.  I would love to see Lucas make something like THX-1138 or American Graffiti, but after hearing that he was simply going to re-release his old films again (this time in 3D, because, of course, that’s what everyone is watching now) I said enough is enough.

That's me on the right, my son in the middle wearing his custom Mando and our friend Brian. Yeah, I built that from scratch.

I think a majority of fans are simply tired seeing yet another re-release of films we have seen.  Star Trek keeps pumping out new stuff, and if there is something new coming out in the Star Wars saga it has to be the Clone Wars animated series, which is cool.  But fans want to know why Han didn’t shoot first (and he did), if we will ever see those original three films in blu-ray glory as they were released in theaters originally or if Lucas will ever stop tweaking and cutting his films up willy-nilly.  I am all about creative license, but there was a reason we all fell in love with the original three.  Those reasons are all gone for me.

Something tells me that those reasons are all gone for Lucas as well.  Have you read the reviews of Red Tails?  George Lucas is now worth something like $3.2 billion.  Do you think it is such a big deal to him if he loses a few mil putting out a rehashed movie like this (which I liked better when it was called The Tuskegee Airmen) and then re-packaging The Saga in 3D for more people who will stand in line like lemmings to watch it again?

I really don’t think it’s a big deal for Lucas or for us.  For me, I’ll just wait until he finds the creative fire again and decides to take a risk and write something original that changes the genre once again.  I may be waiting a while… or maybe I’m just trying to bullseye wamprats in my T-16.
