The final chapter of my post-apocalyptic epic romantic tale of faith and peril, This Broken Earth, Book 3: Babylon the Great is coming out on December 21st. I have decided to post 10 of the things that could happen to our planet that might bring about the end…
…and enjoy some hype along the way…
Way the World Ends #1: World War 3
Einstein once said that if World War 3 happened, then World War 4 would be fought with sticks and rocks. In many ways this is true, but many people feel that a full scale nuclear conflict would be out of the question.
Nobody’s that stupid.
Some analysts currently feel that the present situation in Syria, Gaza and Iran could explode into a conflict that could indeed embroil the entire world in a war that would rival World War 2. World interests always seem to focus on the middle east not because of its wonderful culture and rich history, but because of its oil, especially the U.S. The crisis in Gaza, the civil war in Syria and the saber rattling of Iran do not help with the peace process. Every superpower in this world has their fingers in the great oily pie of the middle east, and all it would take is a nation like Israel or Iran to stir up a virtual hornet’s nest.
What if Israel decided that Iran was nearing completion of a nuclear device and decided to send out their air force to take out the plant where it was being constructed (conveniently placed near a school or nursery)? What if Iran was to produce a nuclear device, give it to some hothead terrorist who then blew himself up in Israel? China, Russia, the U.S. and Europe are all very heavily committed to alliances with many of the countries in that region.
At first, it would be a war between the middle eastern nations, and then it would be allied skirmishes or special forces being sent, then it would be arial assaults followed up by a full ground war. Nukes would be used in a strategic sense. Stealth would be the order of the day, with personnel and vehicles outfitted with new invisible cloak technology.
It would be ugly, and would bankrupt the world. The war in my novel simply runs out of gas, as the estimates of world oil supply were exaggerated greatly. Peak oil is still a debated issue, but at least in my novel it is a stark reality. It’s fun to see how it plays out…at least for those of us not living in my novel.
